ALWAYS ON AVAILABILITY GROUP

Always On Availability Group is a high availability and disaster recovery solution that provides an enterprise-level alternative to database mirroring. Introduced in SQL Server 2012 (11.x), Always On maximizes the availability of a set of user databases for a business. An availability group supports a failover environment for a discrete set of user databases, known as availability databases, that failover together. An availability group supports a primary read-write database set and one to eight corresponding secondary database sets. Optionally, secondary databases may be available for read-only access and/or some backup operations.

LOG SHIPPING

One of the most common ways to achieve high availability in SQL Server is through Log Shipping. With this mode, we maintain one or more SQL Server instances in "read-only" mode where we restore the database change logs at regular intervals. The log shipping is a cost-effective, simple, and alternative method compared to other high availability methods such as clustering or mirroring.

The main difference with mirroring, is that log shipping allows the secondary instance to be in standbymode, enabling access to this instance in read-only mode. Many companies have their online database (primary instance) with the entire business; then, they present secondary instances in read-only mode with SQL Server reports to avoid overloading the primary. Another difference is that you can include more than one secondary instance, unlike mirroring where you can only have one secondary instance. The main disadvantage of mirroring relates to the automatic failover, which does not occur in Log Shipping, as it must be done manually.

ADVANCED SQL SERVER PERMORMANCE TUNING

Fixing erroneous queries and resolving performance issues can involve hours (or days) of investigation and testing. Sometimes we can quickly reduce that time by identifying common design patterns indicative of low-performing T-SQL.

The development of pattern recognition for detection can allow us to immediately focus on what is most likely the problem. While performance tuning often involves hours of extended event collection, tracing, execution plans, and statistics, being able to quickly identify potential bottlenecks can short-circuit all that work.

THE MICROSOFT SQL SERVER DATABASE ENGINE TUNING ADVISOR

The Microsoft SQL Server Database Engine Tuning Advisor helps you optimize database configuration by identifying an optimal set of indexes, indexed views, and partitions without requiring expert understanding of the database structure. It advises analyzing a specific workload using trace files, trace tables, or T-SQL scripts as input.
