5 Cybersecurity Events of 2023
1. 13.2% Increase in Cybersecurity Spending
One of the main estimates based on how 2022 ended is the increase in spending on cybersecurity. According to the consulting firm Canalys, global spending on cybersecurity products and services will rise by 13.2% this year, reaching a minimum of $223.8 billion.
The focus is on enhancing companies' global resilience by adopting zero trust architectures to address vulnerabilities. The implementation and integration of various products will be the preferred mechanism. Additionally, the simplicity of operations with managed services, compared to the growing costs of self-management, will be prioritized.

2. 14% Growth in the Cybersecurity Market
Just as companies will increase their cybersecurity spending, the counterpart also grows. Cybersecurity service providers, such as ITD Consulting, are expected to expand by 14.1%, reaching $144.3 billion this year.
The growth will primarily be driven by investments in services related to cybersecurity. This category includes consulting, outsourcing, deployment, implementation, maintenance, and managed security. The expansion is expected to account for 54.5% of the global cybersecurity market in 2023.
Additionally, the sales of cybersecurity-related products such as endpoint security, network security, web and email security, data security, identity and access management, and vulnerability and security analysis are projected to increase by 11.7%, or $79.5 billion, in 2023.
3. 74% of SMEs Feel Vulnerable
As investments and offerings in cybersecurity increase, so does the perception of vulnerability. According to the ESET SMB Digital Security Sentiment Report 2022, we ended the year with a heightened sense of vulnerability to cyberattacks, particularly among small businesses.
The report reveals that 74% of SMEs feel vulnerable to cyberattacks. Among the reasons for this, 84% of respondents believe it is due to a lack of cybersecurity awareness among employees, which significantly increases risks.
Other factors include vulnerabilities in relationships with suppliers and partners (mentioned by 79% of respondents) and the migration of services to the cloud (cited by 77%). The main challenges identified were staying up to date with technological advancements (50%) and investing more in protection (49%).

4. 300% Increase in Cyberattacks Due to the Russia-Ukraine Conflict
According to Mandiant, there was a 300% increase in cyberattacks in 2022, primarily due to the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. The report highlights a 250% rise in cyberattacks against Ukraine and a 300% increase targeting NATO member countries.
These attacks include campaigns against Google, which reported dismantling up to 1,950 campaigns aimed at compromising its platform, perpetrated by Russian organizations such as the Internet Research Agency (IRA), KrymskybridGe, News Front, ANNA News, and UKR Leaks.
Microsoft also detected a surge in large-scale attacks, half of which targeted U.S. companies, especially tech firms.
5. Reddit Hack
The popular online forum Reddit fell victim to a cyberattack at the beginning of the year. On February 9, it was reported that a sophisticated and targeted phishing attack had affected the platform. The group of cybercriminals responsible managed to steal several confidential company data, including source code and internal business information.
By creating a fake website, the cyberattack aimed to steal the login credentials of Reddit employees and their multi-factor authentication (MFA) tokens. Once the attackers obtained the data of just one employee, they gained access to all the compromised confidential information.

As you can see, although we are just starting the year, the outlook for cybersecurity is not encouraging. However, the market is adapting to provide you with the best solutions for your business.
