Windows is the most widely used desktop operating system on the planet. Microsoft's creation can be found in almost every corner of the world, but reaching the current Windows 10 has involved numerous versions (and, as you may recall, not all of them were exactly good).
From Windows 1.0 to Windows 10, only a point separates the names of both versions, but there is a world of difference between them.

What is Windows?
Windows is an operating system developed by Microsoft. It consists of software made up of a set of programs that allow users to manage and control the functioning of various parts of a computer, such as memory, storage disk, and peripheral devices, as well as running other programs and applications.
The software is activated when the hardware, that is, a computer or device, is powered on. Once the session has started, the user can perform multiple tasks and actions on the computer through the operating system, such as managing different programs or installing new devices.
The word "Windows," which comes from English and means "windows," refers to the software structure that allows users to view multiple contents (such as programs and files) organized in different compartments or windows.
Organizing content in different windows allows the user to visualize them simultaneously, whether in a tiled format, minimized, or overlapping. In other words, the window interface allows users to see and execute multiple actions at once, such as a data processor (Word document), a video player, or a graphics editor, among many others.

What is the history of Windows?
In 1975, Bill Gates and Paul Allen founded Microsoft in the United States, aiming to develop and market programs for the Altair 8800, a microcomputer designed in 1974. Gates and Allen created the first programming language for the Altair, called Altair Basic.
In 1979, Microsoft released the first operating system called Xenix, which is now obsolete. In 1981, they created a new operating system that led to their success: DOS (Disk Operating System).
In 1985, the first version of what is now known as the Windows operating system was launched. Later, in 1989, another product that remains relevant today was introduced, functioning alongside the Windows interface: the Microsoft Office suite, which consists of a set of integrated applications, such as Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel.
In 1990, Microsoft launched Windows 3.0, a new version of the operating system. As improved versions were developed, the corresponding version number was modified. However, in 1995, Windows 95 was released, offering a completely new interface with an enhanced file explorer, a quick-access start menu, and better hardware compatibility, among other advantages.
Starting in 2012, Windows 8 was launched with a new, more interactive design that could be operated through touch screens. This version of the software was designed to be used on other devices, such as mobile phones or tablets, and to coexist with the rise of the Internet and social media.

What are the features of Windows?
Windows has evolved significantly over the years; however, it maintains characteristics that identify it and highlight its personality. Among the main features are:
The desktop: This is the background of the monitor screen that serves as the base for users to run the operating system, programs, and applications.
• Icons: These are small symbolic images that provide shortcuts to programs, files, or folders located on the desktop. The type of icon and its location can be customized by the user.
• Taskbar: This is a bar located at the bottom of the desktop that allows users to visualize, through icons, the programs, files, or folders that are currently active for quick selection.
• Start button: This provides access to the main dropdown menu. The button is located at the bottom of the taskbar.
• Menu: This is a panel or dropdown list that can be displayed or hidden from the Start button. It offers shortcuts to programs, files, and certain functions of the computer (such as maintenance or device management).

How has Windows evolved?
Throughout Microsoft's evolution, the Windows operating system has presented different improved versions. Among the main ones are:
Windows 1.X/2.x: This represented a significant change for operating systems of the time, which were based on text representations. This version used monochromatic graphical representations.
Windows 3.x: Launched as a multitasking interface that was fully color-based, it introduced new computing concepts, such as icons, folders, taskbar, and wallpaper, among others.
Windows NT (New Technology): Released as a different version designed for connectivity to network servers, it competed with the UNIX operating system.
Windows 95: This was a completely improved version with 32-bit environment management and plug-and-play functionality, allowing users to connect and use devices without prior configuration.
Windows 98/98 SE: This was very similar to its predecessor but offered improvements for recognizing a wider variety of external devices through the plug-and-play feature.
Windows 2000: This was an evolution of Windows with improved hardware recognition, 64-bit support, and Active Directory service, which allowed sharing devices over the network, such as printers, routers, or servers with other connected computers.
Windows Millennium: This version was similar to its predecessor but featured significant improvements in recognizing external devices through the updated plug-and-play function via USB ports.
Windows XP: This version was notable for its ability to execute remote assistance, allowing the user to share control of their computer with another connected to an internal or external network.
Windows 7: Launched as a significantly improved version regarding compatibility, both for programs and external connectors, even allowing work with multiple monitors simultaneously. It also offered greater data processing speed, enabling quick graphics transitions.
Windows 10: This consisted of a new generation of the operating system with an interactive slate format typical of mobile phones. Additionally, its revamped interface offered better features for working connected to cloud services or external servers.
