Two of the main challenges are budget reductions (for hardware, software, and personnel) and tight deadlines for delivering solutions. The Linux community has developed kernel support for software RAID (Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks) to help overcome these challenges. Properly implemented software RAID can eliminate system downtime caused by disk drive failures. The source code of the Linux kernel, RAID modules, and the raidtools package are available at minimal cost under the GNU Public License.
